Crooked Mile

Crooked Mile is a North Georgia-based traditional bluegrass band which is returning to Bear for the second consecutive year. Crooked Mile consists of four distinctive vocalists, and its instrumentation is banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and bass.

All are multi-instrumentalists, and frequent changes of instruments and parts in the band are common in their shows. The repertoire Crooked Mile plays is rooted in the music created by bluegrass artists from the 1950s through the early 1970s.

Bluegrass is a vocal music, and Crooked Mile emphasizes this with solo singing, duets, and trios. Sets consist of songs along the continuum from hard-driving fast songs to slow ballads, and like the best bluegrass, the band offers a sampling of old-time fiddle-and-banjo styles and instrumentals as well.

Joel Cordle plays bass, guitar, and mandolin. Edward Hunter plays banjo, fiddle and guitar. David Rutland plays mandolin and banjo; and Michael Bordeaux plays guitar, bass, and banjo. While the band chooses songs that are well-known, it also offers a healthy sampling of lesser-known but equally great tunes, as well as a few originals by members of the band.
