This year's Bear on the Square Festival Co-Sponsor is the internationally-renowned John C. Campbell Folk School of Brasstown, N.C. A longtime friend of our festival, the school, which dates back to 1925, has been a major sponsor of Bear on the Square for the past seven years.
The folk school is a perfect fit for a sponsoring role at Bear. Throughout its long history, the school has promoted the Southern Appalachian region by offering instruction in art, craft, music, dance, agriculture, cooking, gardening, nature studies, photography and writing which is rooted in the traditions of this region and other cultures of the world. The school focuses on experiences in non-competitive learning and community life that are joyful and enlivening.
Appearing at this year's Bear are a group of demonstrating artists as part of the Artist Marketplace, as well as the Brasstown Morris Dancers and their fabulous band, and the Kudzu Kickers clogging team from Murphy, N.C.
In addition, several musicians affiliated with the folk school will be playing in the John C. Campbell Folk School booth/tent area of the Marketplace from 10:00am-12:30pm and 1;30-3:00pm on both Saturday and Sunday. David Liden, Geraud Barralon and Annie Fain Barralon, all from Brasstown, NC, will host an Old-Time Music Jam, and Geoff Hohwald and Rick Taylor, both from Atlanta, will host a Bluegrass Music Jam.
