Comments from Billy Roper and James Sargous on two paintings they created together and donated to the Bear on the Square Auction to benefit the festival. The paintings are approximately 4' X 8'

Moods of Earth --- music, earth, wind and fire
                         ************************************************************************************************

I HOPE THAT THESE PIECES RAISE THOUSANDS FOR THE BEAR THAT WOULD BE GOOD. IN MY MIND IN A CAFE, BEHIND A COUCH IN A HOUSE. THEY ARE NOT THE SIZE OR COLOR THAT EITHER LARGE SPACE OR SMALL ONE WOULD NOT WORK. THEY WILL WORK ANYWHERE. AND I PROMISE YOU ---- NO MATTER HOW LONG YOU LIVE YOU WON'T EVER SEE ALL THAT IS THERE. EACH DAY YOU WILL SEE SOMETHING NEW.

I LIKE JAMES AND ALWAYS HAVE BUT HIS PERSONALITY AND MINE IN SOME WAYS COULD NOT BE MORE DIFFERENT. IN DOING THE PAINTING HE WAS ALWAYS BRIGHT HAPPY, CHEERFUL THE COLOR MASTER, THEN HERE I WOULD COME THE HILL BILLY QUANTUM PHYSICIST. WHERE HE WAS SEEING COLOR, LIGHT, DESIGN, NATURE I WAS SEEING THE BIG BANG/CREATIONIST STORY.

WHERE AS I WOULD BE DRIFTING IN AND OUT OF MY DELUSIONAL ALTERED STATE MENTALITY, HE WAS FIRMLY GROUNDED. IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SEEING YOU CAN SEE ME DRIFT OFF AND YOU WILL ALSO SEE HIM PULLING THE PAINTINGS BACK TO SOLID GROUND.

WHEN WE WAS WORKING ON THE PAINTINGS. I WOULD BE WORKING ON SOME PART AND THERE WOULD BE A SPACE I CREATED THAT NEEDED FILLING IN SOMEHOW. I WOULD SAY JAMES SEE THIS SPOT HERE COULD YOU POUR A LITTLE JAMES ON IT AND HE WOULD FILL IT IN WITH HIS WAY OF COLORING/PAINTING. SAME THING WITH HIM SOMETIME HE WOULD STOP AND ASK ME TO DETAIL SOME PLACE. IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SEEING IT IS EASY TO TELL HIS PART FROM MINE. BUT JUST LIKE JAMES SAID IT WAS LIKE PLAYING MUSIC SOMETIMES EACH WOULD LEAD AND SOMETIMES EACH WOULD FOLLOW OR WOULD PLAY RHYTHM SO TO SPEAK.

THERE were NO EGOS GETTING IN THE WAY AT ALL EVER. JAMES AND CHRISTINA ARE GIVERS THAT IS THEIR VERY NATURAL way. JAMES IS A SURE ENOUGH MUSIC LOVER SO IT IS A NATURAL THING FOR HIM TO GIVE THESE PIECES.  BUT JAMES IS SO EXCITED TO BE GIVING THESE PIECES TO THE BEAR, IT SORT OF MAKES ME FEEL BAD LIKE A SLACKER AND IT ALSO RENEW MY ORIGINAL FEELINGS ABOUT THE BEAR AND I MEAN THAT.

Self brag is half scandal, but these paintings are good. They are very, very good.

-Billy Roper

The way these paintings got done was a long convoluted process. We talked about doing them and we even got together and built the frames and stretched the canvas. Then life got in the way for about three maybe four years. Finally we were doing an art tour together here at the Funky Chicken and we jumped on them over two weeks.I kind of bushwhacked Billy when he showed up and took his keys so he could not leave until we at least started them.

We each took a panel and sketched a very simple drawing and took off from there. We never used each others color palette but just tried to compliment each others choice of color. Both pieces were worked on by both of us at the same time and never alone. The plywood panel with the abstract owl was Billys sketch and the larger canvas was my sketch. All other work on them was done together.
It was so much fun to collaborate with the the great one.If we could sell them we would do one every week but they are kind of special. What i mean is they need a special place to hang. The experience was as much fun as playing music.
